Sclerotherapy

Sclerotherapy is the most common procedure performed in an out-patient setting for the treatment of unsightly leg veins. Spider veins and blue veins (reticular veins) can be eliminated with a series of injections into the affected veins.

In Sclerotherapy, spider veins are injected with an FDA-approved “sclerosing” agent, which causes the vein to close down and eventually be reabsorbed into the body and disappear, similar to how the body absorbs a bruise. Support hose are then worn to help shrink the veins and help decrease bruising and swelling. Treatments are well tolerated and take 20-30 minutes on average. Several treatments are often necessary to eliminate 80-90% of the affected veins.

Almost everyone is a candidate for the treatment. Patients can immediately return to work and resume normal activities after Sclerotherapy treatments. Sclerotherapy is highly effective, inexpensive, and less painful than many other vein treatments. It may take 6-8 weeks to notice the veins disappearing. Several treatments may be required to achieve optimal results.

Sclerotherapy is the only non-surgical remedy for the deeper feeder veins. At Elase, it is recommended to follow this treatment with laser vein therapy, a non-invasive approach to clean up the more superficial spider veins. Since new veins can develop over time, due to the chronic nature of the condition, patients are encouraged to return for maintenance therapy yearly or every few years.
