Tummy Tuck
Getting a more fit and tone body is something that most of us crave. Exercise and dieting can help a lot in reaching and maintaining our desired physique. However, the ability of our body to respond to exercise and diet effectively is partially affected by our genes. This is the reason why we may be able to burn adipose tissues that deposit in our thighs or the other parts of the body but not that easily at the other
parts like the abdominal region. Our body’s intolerance to physical stress may also limit our ability to exercise; hence making it more difficult for us to lose weight.
Abdominoplasty
Abdominoplasty is more commonly known as a tummy tuck. It is a surgical procedure that removes excess fat and tightens muscles in the abdominal areas. Along with fat, a tummy tuck procedure also takes out loose skin. The result of an abdominoplasty is a firmer and flatter tummy that often gives individuals much needed confidence.
Psychological Effects
There are a number of reasons for why people consider getting a tummy tuck procedure. However, the most popular reason is to boost one’s self confidence. In the increasingly image-conscious society that we live in, it is not unusual for one to feel a bit insecure. Often, this dissatisfaction with the way one looks will mess up with one’s self confidence and limit the individual’s ability to perform optimally. With a tummy tuck procedure, it isn’t just flatter tummy that one gets but also self-esteem.
I could not be happier with the results of my surgery! So glad I finally did it! Dr. Gonzalez is a meticulous perfectionist who took his time and did an amazing job. I had lots of sagging skin and thought I had to live with the stretch marks that came from having my four kids. But, my tight little tummy looks brand new again!
Candidates for Tummy Tuck
The best people to get an abdominoplasty procedure are those who aren’t really obese but have a lot of fat tissues in their midsection. These people need tummy tucks in order to make their tummy sections more proportional to the rest of their body. An example of those people is women who have given birth multiple times because their abdominal muscles and skin are likely to be stretched after going through a number of pregnancies. Individuals who have lost a lot of weight but have a lot of stretched skin are also ideal candidates for tummy tuck procedures.
On the other hand, if you still want to lose more weight, you should postpone your abdominoplasty until after you have gone down to your desired weight. Women who still intend to get pregnant should refrain from getting the surgery as well as individuals who may have undergone abdominal surgery in the past as scars could become not just permanent but also very visible.
Procedure
The procedure is quite simple. Your doctor will make a long incision that starts from one hipbone to the other. A second incision is done around the navel. The abdominal skin is then separated from the muscles which are in turn tightened. The skin is pulled down and a new hole for your navel is made before stitching everything back into place.
Post-Procedure
Since a tummy tuck is a general surgery procedure, it is expected to feel pain and discomfort. However, your doctor can easily prescribe pain medications to numb the pain. For partial tummy tucks, you may be released after just a couple of hours. But for full tummy tuck procedures, you may have to stay in the hospital for as long as three days. You may not be able to stand straight right after the procedure, however you should not try to walk right away. Your doctor should be able to give you instructions on how to shower and change your dressings.
After five to seven days, your doctor may remove the surface stitches. The deep sutures will be removed in two to three weeks. By that time, you may no longer have to do any dressing but wear a support garment.
Exercise is also recommended for people who have undergone tummy tuck procedures. However, you should abstain from very exhausting work outs unless you definitely feel that your body can take the stress. Exercise will allow you to keep the effects of the tummy tuck procedure for a longer period of time.
