Laser Skin Lightening

There are many factors, both internal and external, that cause us to age.  Internal factors include hormones, genetics, and diet.  External factors include pollution and lifestyle choices.  But over 90% of the visible damage on our skin is due to extended, unprotected sun exposure.  Although sun exposure has many damaging results, one of the most visible signs is the splotchy discoloration on our skin.  The years of tanning and not wearing sun-screen, tend to catch up with us in our mid 20’s and 30’s.   We begin to see spots appear on our face, shoulders, arms, back and decollate.   They may be small freckles or  large and obvious splotches.

There are several names for this discoloration; melasma, chloasma, hyperpigmentation, sun spots, age spots, freckles or liver spots.  And although the sun is the number one cause, other factors can influence the prevalence of splotchy skin including hormones, genetics, diet and trauma to the skin.

But regardless of the cause, the good news is that we have a solution.  Using Alexandrite laser technology we can quickly and easily remove the discoloration from your skin.  Whether it is freckles, sun spots, melasma, or hyperpigmentation due to a trauma, our laser technology can lighten or completely remove the discoloration. Elase offers laser skin rejuvenation in Salt Lake City, Draper and Orem Utah.

How many treatments will I need?

The number of treatments needed varies by client.  Most clients require 2-3.  The darker the spot is, the easier it is to remove.  Discoloration that is due to hormonal conditions, such as melasma or “pregnancy mask” are the most difficult to remove and generally require 3-4 treatments along with a bleaching product.

Is this treatment permanent?

The sun damage that is present on your skin today, is due to sun exposure incurred years ago.   The free radical damage caused by the sun, begins deep in the dermis of the skin, and as our skin exfoliates, it begins to move to the surface.  So, the color that we remove is permanently gone, but there may be additional damage that comes to the surface.  We recommend that clients use a broad spectrum sunscreen at all times to protect from additional damage.  We also recommend that you plan on an annual touch-up treatment.

Is this treatment safe?

Yes, skin lightening is a very safe procedure.   When you receive your treatment you will see that the spots begin to darken, and will stay darker, until they slough off.  This process generally takes 7-10 days.  During that time do not pick or scratch at the skin as it will cause scarring.  It is common to have small blisters on the skin immediately post treatment.

Who is a good candidate for Skin Lightening?

Because the lasers are targeting pigment, people with darker skin types are not good candidates for this treatment.
